A hostage describes the murder and police, including a shooting in the Campbell River

The events leading up to the Campbell River killing and the shooting involving police earlier this week are becoming clearer.

Ryan Langlois, 39, was killed on his boat at Campground River’s Discovery Harbor Authority early Monday morning. The marina is also the site of an investigation by an independent police investigation into the shooting, which occurred after officers responded to a potential hostage-taking at the marina at 1:45 a.m. Monday.

Several details of the incident have been released by the RCMP or the IIO, but CHEK News has learned of new details that give a clearer picture of what exactly happened at the marina.

A witness to the shooting told CHEK News that he drank on a boat with Langlois, a 74-year-old man named Jacques and another man. He said things had turned out to be deadly after Jacques was upset by some of the comments that Langlois allegedly made. Shortly afterwards, Jacques left and returned with a pistol, then shot and killed Langlois, according to a witness who asked not to be identified.

Then, the witness said, the attacker took him and another man hostage, but eventually released them. After this happened, the other man called 911. Then the police arrived on the scene and tried to negotiate with Jacques, who is allegedly brandishing a weapon. Eventually, police fired multiple shots and Jacques was pronounced dead on the spot.

Dustin Gooding, who was Langley’s business partner but had not seen him in months, said the whole incident was difficult to understand.

“It’s awful. I’ve been in a fog for the last few days. It’s hard to believe,” he said.

Gooding said a 74-year-old man named Jacques, like Langlois, had lived on his boat in the marina for the past few years. He said the two were known to exchange thorns, but also helped each other.

“I knew this man, Jacques. I think his name was either Jack. I talked to him all the time in the dock. It’s really weird. I’m trying to put it together. I don’t understand why this happened, “Gooding said.

Gooding also said he was in the process of selling his share of the Langlois business because the couple had disagreements. However, Gooding said he would miss the 39-year-old man and was saddened by his death.

“He got the best out of people in many ways. He had some really good traits when it came to making people feel good about themselves and their skills and keep up the good work, ”Gooding said.

The RCMP continues to investigate Langolis’ death, while the Office of Independent Investigations is investigating police actions in the other deadly shooting.
