Researchers at Baylor and Stanford universities say they have taken an important step towards condensing some of the benefits of exercise into a simple pill.
Researchers, Baylor’s professor of pediatrics, Dr. Yong Sue, and Stanford’s assistant professor of pathology, Dr. Jonathan Long, say they have identified a molecule produced in the blood during exercise that successfully reduces food intake and obesity. in mice, according to Baylor Medical College.
“Regular exercise has been shown to help with weight loss, regulate appetite and improve the metabolic profile, especially in overweight and obese people,” said Sue. “If we can understand the mechanism by which exercise triggers these benefits, then we are closer to helping many people improve their health.”

“We wanted to understand how exercise works at the molecular level so we can capture some of its benefits,” Long added. “For example, older or weak people who can’t exercise enough may one day benefit from taking a drug that can help slow osteoporosis, heart disease or other conditions.

The pair of researchers identified an amino acid called Lac-Phe. When they gave the amino acid doses to mice fed a high-fat diet, they saw a 50 percent reduction in food intake over the next 12 hours, according to Baylor.
Researchers have also found that humans and even racehorses produce the same amino acid when exposed to strenuous physical activity.

“Our next steps include finding more details about how Lac-Phe mediates its effects in the body, including the brain,” Sue told Baylor. “Our goal is to learn to modulate this path of therapeutic intervention exercises.”
