In a series of tweets Wednesday night, Calgary Conservative MP Knows Hill said she was encouraged to throw her hat in the ring and confirmed that she was “giving serious consideration to her candidacy for provincial leadership”.

“I will make my decision based on the conversations I have with the people I represent – the Alberts,” she said.

As a result, Rempel Garner said he would step down as co-chair of the Conservative Party of Canada’s candidate, Patrick Brown.

According to Elections Alberta, seven registered candidates are vying to lead the UCP, including MLA’s Rebecca Schultz and Travis Tows, who have resigned from their cabinet posts to run. MLA Soviet Sony has also stepped down as transport minister to launch his own campaign.

Other contenders include former UCP cabinet ministers Travis Tows, Rajan Soney, Rebecca Schultz and Lila Ahir, along with former Wildrose leader Daniel Smith.

Independent MLA Todd Lowen, who was expelled from the group after criticism of Prime Minister Jason Kenny, and Amisk Mayor Bill Rock are also running.

Kenny announced in May that he would step down after receiving only 51.4% support in a leadership review.

The UCP is expected to nominate a new leader on October 6.
