A video released by the commission on Tuesday appears to show a man taking pictures of tunnels, corridors and stairs in the Capitol complex on January 5, 2021 (Capitol Police Surveillance / January 6 Committee)
The House of Representatives Election Commission, which investigated the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, released footage showing that one of the people GOP’s Barry Laudermilck of Georgia toured on January 5 was outside the building. during the uprising, shouting threats to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The video, parts of which were released by the commission on Wednesday, appears to show a man taking pictures of tunnels, corridors and stairs in the Capitol complex while on a tour led by Loudermilk. The commission also released footage that appears to show the same man marching to the Capitol on January 6.
The commission did not identify the man, but sources say the commission interviewed him. The commission also did not provide evidence that the man in the video entered the Capitol on January 6.
The video, released by the commission, appears to challenge the findings of the U.S. Capitol Police Department, as described in a letter sent to Republican lawmakers this week, which said the department reviewed security records from Jan. 5 and did not notice any activities that it considers suspicious or relevant to a reconnaissance tour.
Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said the video showed Loudermilk “with a group of approximately 12 people who later grew to 15 people” as they walked through the Capitol’s office buildings on Jan. 5. Manger also said the group of visitors had not “appeared in any tunnels, which would take them to the US Capitol.”
On May 19, 2022, the committee selected invited you to meet with us on evidence of a tour you provided on January 5, 2021. Based on our review of surveillance videos, social media activity, and witness accounts, we understand that you led a group tour of parts of the Capitol complex on January 5, 2021. This group remained for several hours, although the complex was closed to the public that day, “said the chairman of the commission, Democratic Representative Benny Thompson of Mississippi, on Wednesday in new letter to Loudermilk.
“Surveillance footage shows a tour of approximately ten people led by you to the Rayburn, Longworth and Cannon House office areas, as well as the entrances to tunnels leading to the US Capitol,” he added. “Tourists photographed and recorded areas of the complex that are not usually of interest to tourists, including corridors, staircases and checkpoints.”
Loudermilk said in a statement to CNN after the video was released Wednesday that “Capitol police have already made this false accusation in bed, but the commission is undermining Capitol police and doubling their defamation campaign by releasing so-called evidence of a tour of the house’s office buildings.” for which I have already spoken publicly. “
