Toronto car theft: Police make new arrests

A third person has been arrested in connection with an investigation into a series of car thefts and gun robberies in the Toronto and Durham area.

According to police, the investigation, called “Project Zigzag”, began after 10 car thefts and a robbery between May 15 and May 26.

During the car theft, a suspected man armed with a pistol will approach the victim and ask for the keys to their car, police said. At least one more suspect will be waiting in an escape car.

Police say five of the incidents led to vehicle theft. No one was physically injured.

In a related incident, a suspected man entered a restaurant, pointed a gun and asked employees to hand over money and fireworks.

Officers were forced to aim to set off fireworks in an escape car, police said before the suspects fled the scene.

Earlier this month, police said 19-year-olds and 17-year-olds had been detained and faced a combined 100 charges in connection with the investigation.

In a press release issued Thursday, Toronto police said a third suspect had been detained.

The suspect, according to police, was initially arrested in Bari after a car theft on June 7 in which a victim was shot.

Toronto police later identified them as Project ZigZag suspects.

18-year-old Toronto resident Michael Williams has been charged with 55 crimes, including robbery with a firearm, intentional disguise and possession of a firearm or ammunition in violation of a restraining order.

The charges have not been proven in court.
