* Strong thunderstorm until midnight *
Update at 17:10 – Fighting rain and storms
The previous warning of a severe thunderstorm was lifted early. Local storms have weakened considerably recently, although lightning and thunderstorms have been raging for an hour or more in the western part of the region.
It appears that the relative stability of sea air mass east of the Blue Ridge may tend to kill local activity as stronger storms move south to Culpepper and Spotsylvania. There is another series of interrupted storms in Pennsylvania, which may approach later tonight. We will follow.
Update at 16:40 – Strong storm over the western suburbs
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Montgomery, Laudoun and Fairfax counties until 5:15 p.m. There is a risk of harmful winds and light hail during this storm.
As the storms intensified in the west, they released an impressive hailstorm. Additional hail up to an inch or even greater is possible if the storms pulsate as they pass.
Temperatures today reached the mid-80s. With the humidity in the air, I felt more like the 90’s. The combination of heat and humidity also set off some storms in the west that are moving in the area. They are with us until the evening, with the potential for harmful winds and a little hail, along with torrential rains.
