Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” broke records, topping the UK charts 37 years after the song was released for the first time.
Interest in the 1985 song revived after joining the new season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
After taking off with young fans on social media, many of whom heard Bush’s music for the first time, the song began to rise in the charts around the world, prompting Bush to make a rare public statement to thank fans for their support.
On Friday (June 17th), it was announced that “Running Up That Hill” had reached No. 1 on the official singles chart, an achievement it never achieved when the song was first released in 1985 and peaked at № 3.
Bush’s leap up the charts broke three major records in the history of the British charts.
The song broke the record previously held by Wham! (for “Last Christmas”) for the longest time required for a single to reach № 1 in the official single chart.
At 63, Bush is also the oldest single to receive the single № 1 and has the longest ever single difference between the single № 1, most recently topping the charts in 1978 with Wuthering Heights.
Earlier this week, Bush returned to his blog to share his surprise when “Running Up That Hill” climbed to the top of the charts.
Describing it as “exciting”, she wrote: “The song is reacted to in so many positive ways. I have never experienced anything like this before!
“Thanks again to the Duffer Brothers – for their latest, exclusive Stranger Things series, the song is opening up to a whole new audience.”
The full movie Stranger Things: Soundtrack from the Netflix series, season 4 (including Volume I and Volume II) will be available on CD and cassette on Friday, September 9th. Vinyl stamps of the album are scheduled for release later this year.
