The city’s fire service says the crash happened at about 3 p.m. in a 700-zone construction site on Mount Blood Boulevard, near the Mississippi River in Highland Park.
Construction workers tried to save their colleagues before calling 911. Fire crews responded to the site and secured the trench before working to remove dirt and rock.
It is believed that the two workers in the excavation were killed under the weight of the debris. The fire department called it a recovery mission.
“We feel terrible for the victims when something like this happens,” said Fire Chief Assistant Chief Matt Simpson. “We train for this every day. We work to make sure that this thing, if it can be avoided, will be avoided through our training efforts. Unfortunately, it was not our turn to make that difference today.”
