Cornin faces booing at the Texas GOP Congress

Senator John Cornin (R-Texas) was booed as he delivered a speech at the Texas Republican Congress in Houston, Texas, on Friday.

From several videos posted on Twitter, there were boos from a crowd of people listening to his speeches.

Cornin has an A-plus rating from the National Arms Association (NRA) and is the leading Republican negotiator in a group of bipartisan lawmakers working on an agreement on arms legislation.

KHOU noted that it had received boos at various points in its speeches. In particular, the booing comes when he talks about measures that could be included in the group’s final bill.

“More mental health resources, more support for our schools and ensuring that violent criminals and the mentally ill can’t buy firearms,” Cornin said of what could be included in the bill, according to CNN.

“This means, above all, the implementation of current legislation. That’s what I’ve heard from many of you here today and this week, and that’s what we’re working on, nothing more and nothing less. “

Cornin’s office declined to comment to The Hill.

His comments come amid ongoing Senate talks to finalize the final bill on gun violence after several meetings Thursday.

Two provisions that senators must finalize are controversial, including one on a “boyfriend’s door” that would block romantic partners from owning firearms if convicted of crimes, domestic violence lawsuits, and a proposal that would provide state funding for red flag laws.

Senators are eager to finalize the legislative text, which comes after several high-profile shootings in Buffalo, New York, Uwalde, Texas, and Tulsa, Okla.
