Forget the new MacBook Pro, Apple has something better

As Apple launches the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, we hope that the relatively low price compared to larger models and the attractiveness of the MacBook Pro name will attract customers. But these customers need to take some time to review the rest of the Mac portfolio and consider their needs carefully.

This entry-level MacBook Pro offers many benefits to Apple, but for consumers, those same points weaken the advertising space.

Design comes first. Apple has focused on the new design language introduced with the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. As part of this change, Apple has returned MagSafe charging, increased the number of useful I / O ports, new display technology, fast charging and more. Many of these new features have been transferred to the new MacBook Air, also launched at WWDC.

The M2-powered MacBook Pro does not have any of these new features. It retains the design introduced in 2016, the display has not been updated, and ports remain limited. This is great for managing Apple’s supply chain, but surely the new laptop must be new?

Apple may be relying on the capabilities of the M2 chipset, but it’s the same chipset as the new MacBook Air. The MacBook Pro has a small fan that aids cooling and allows the M2 to run hotter and offers more performance than the MacBook Air without a fan. No matter which laptop has M2 and which cooling method is used, M1 Pro and M1 Max in larger Pro laptops outperform both laptops. I have no doubt that there is a very small subset of customers who only need a little more power than the MacBook Air offers, in this case it’s the MacBook Pro, but if you’re looking for power, then you should look for MacBook Pro laptops focused on power. .

The entry-level M2 MacBook Pro gives Apple a “cheap” MacBook Pro in its portfolio and gives the impression that it has an affordable MacBook Pro. It fills a price point in the range and creates a smooth progression in the laptop range.

But this laptop is a fake economy for consumers. Those looking for a universal machine have a better option in the M2 MacBook Air. Those looking for a cheaper laptop with macOS should instead look at the original M1 MacBook Air, which Apple has kept in its books to have a modern laptop for $ 999. Those looking for more power will have no problem searching higher in the range.

This MacBook Pro meets many of Apple’s challenges in device promotion, marketing and management. It does not meet the needs of Apple customers who are looking for a laptop that suits them. These questions are answered elsewhere in Apple’s MacBook range. Instead, consumers should search there.
