NEW CASTLE, NH – A 70-foot yacht burned and sank in New Hampshire, sending three people to hospital, authorities said.
The ship, Elusive, was on the Piscataqua River heading for a New York marina around 4pm on Saturday when a passenger noticed black smoke below deck, a statement from the New Hampshire Security Department said.
The New Hampshire Coast Guard and Marine Patrol posted photos of the flames and the thick black smoke pouring from the ship.
Three passengers, as well as two dogs, jumped overboard as the boat was engulfed in flames. They were rescued by other boats.
The passengers, identified as Arthur Watson, 67, and Diane Watson, 57, both from New Canaan, Connecticut, and Jarod Tubbs, 33, from Jupiter, Florida, were taken to hospital, treated and released.
Despite efforts to save the yacht, it sank in Maine waters and eventually sank about two hours after the initial call to 911, authorities said.
The cause of the fire is being clarified.
