June 2022: What is open, what is closed

June 19 marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were told by Union Army General Gordon Granger that they had been released. Granger’s announcement came almost three years after the proclamation of emancipation. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Emancipation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared that “all persons held as slaves” in the rebellious states “are and will continue to be free.” President Joe Biden’s announcement last year did not give every government agency enough time to act accordingly and shut down. This year, however, all federal agencies, some state governments and some stores will be closed on Monday after the June 16 celebrations throughout the weekend. The U.S. Post Office will be closed and mail will not be delivered by the USPS on Monday, June 20. On Sunday, certain UPS locations will remain open, but will only deliver through its express critical services, pausing all other deliveries until Monday. FedEx will operate during its normal business hours on Sundays and Mondays.

banks

As the Federal Reserve will be monitored on Monday, June 16, most banks will be closed, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JP Morgan. However, TD Bank will close on Sunday, as is their normal schedule, and will open on Monday.

US financial markets

Wall Street will celebrate Monday. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed and have no active business hours.

Schools and government agencies

All federal offices and schools will be closed on Monday.

However, not every state recognizes Juneteenth as a public holiday, which means that some public services may remain open.

States that do not currently recognize Juneteenth as a public holiday include Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Retail

Most shops and restaurants will remain open on June 16 during regular business hours.

Nike has confirmed to Axios that it will close its malls and distribution centers on Sunday and close its corporate headquarters on Monday. Nike, Target and Best Buy were among the stores that made the Juneth holiday a paid holiday in 2020. Although the corporate headquarters of companies such as Apple, Twitter, Target, Lyft and Zillow will close on Monday, the shops and services of retail workers will be closed during normal business hours.
