A mass tourist dies on Mount Washington

A man from the mass traveler in the mountains of New York died after being caught in the snow, gusts of wind of 80 miles per hour

ANDOVER, Massachusetts – An avid Andover tourist lost his life Saturday while climbing Mount Washington. He succumbed to severe hypothermia, even after rescuers reached him on the Gulfside Trail, facing winds, rain and snow.

“It was 50-60 steady, with gusts over 80,” said Lt. Bob Mancini Jr. of New Hampshire’s Fish and Wildlife Division.

These conditions are not normal for June, but they are not unexpected on Mount Washington, which has a reputation for bad weather all year round.

“Mt. “Washington is historically known as one of the worst weather places in the world,” said Lieutenant Mancini.

The victim, Xi Chen, 53, was an experienced tourist and had reservations for the lakes at the cloud hut at the top, according to his wife.

The weather continued to get worse all day.

Boston 25 received the latest series of text messages to his wife. She refused to speak in front of a camera. One of the first texts shows that Chin is beginning to worry.

It read:

“A little worried about hyperthermia. Keep track of my location. ”

Shortly before 4:30 a.m., he sent the destination.

“Mt. Washington or the lake in the cloud hut.

His wife replied:

“It will get dark early in time.” Tell me when you get there.

Not long after, another sinister text:

“If I stop moving, then I’ll have problems.”

His wife replied:

“When will I get there, you guessed it?”

This was one of his last messages:

“I can’t move in trouble.”

His wife tried to call, but received no answer. Then she scored 911. It was now 6:30.

Rescuers were busy with other calls. At least half a dozen other rescues have been made due to the weather. It took a while, but they finally got to Chen.

“Mr. Chen did not react at all times,” said Lieutenant Mancini.

He says they carried him over a mile to the top, where a truck was waiting. They headed to the base to meet an ambulance. That was seven hours after the initial call to 911. Chen was taken to a local hospital but did not survive.
