The International Brotherhood of Electrical Engineers (IBEW), which represents about 750 employees of Canadian National Railway Co., says signaling and communications workers have quit across the country.
IBEW’s Steve Martin confirmed in a text that workers have been legally on strike since 11 a.m. local time on Saturday.
IBEW announced a 72-hour strike on Wednesday morning.
CN did not confirm that the workers had gone on strike, but spokesman Jonathan Abecasis said the company had implemented an “operational contingency plan”, noting that operations were continuing “safely and at normal levels”.
The Montreal-based company says it continues to encourage unions to resolve disputes over wages and benefits through binding arbitration.
CN went through an eight-day strike of more than 3,000 workers represented by Teamsters Canada in November 2019, which cut off supplies and disrupted industries across the country.
CN transports more than 300 million tons of goods and consumer goods across the continent each year.
