Elections in France: Macron loses overall majority world

President Macron intends to save his second term today after radical left-wing and hardline nationalist parties grabbed his general parliamentary majority in a demonstration of voter anger against his French government from top to bottom.

Macron’s centrist bloc, the Ensemble, lost a third of its seats in the last round of parliamentary elections in an angry rebuke for president re-elected two months ago with 59 percent of the vote. To pursue its promised reforms with only a relative majority of 245 seats, his government is facing grueling talks with parts of the conservative Republican Party, which ranks fourth.

Against Macron is a reviving left-wing alliance known as the Nupes, which came to power with 137 seats under the bright leadership of Jean-Luc Melenchon.
