Telegram, the encrypted messaging service, announced on Sunday that it has reached 700 million active monthly users and is launching a new level of subscription for paid users.
“By subscribing to Telegram Premium, users unlock double limits, 4 GB file uploads, faster downloads, exclusive stickers and reactions, improved chat management – and much more,” the Telegram said in a statement.
Additional features include ad-free browsing, animated profile photos, and voice-to-text capabilities.
The price of the first-class subscription will vary depending on the location, although Telegram’s announcement did not specify the exact price and the company did not respond to Insider’s request for comment. Tech Crunch reported that for iPhone users in India, the premium version is priced at $ 6 and has a monthly price of € 5.49 ($ 5.77) in Spain.
Although the app introduces new paid features, Dubai-based CEO Pavel Durov assured users last week that free features will remain free and the company will maintain its privacy-focused approach.
“While our privacy-focused advertising experiments on public channels were more successful than we expected, I believe Telegram should be funded primarily by its users, not advertisers,” Durov wrote in Telegram on June 10, annoying the release at a premium level. “That way, our customers will always be our top priority.”
