Although under investigation and temporarily stepping down as chairman and CEO of WWE, Vince McMahon surprisingly appeared on SmackDown last Friday night.
McMahon kicked off the show at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although fans were not entirely sure how the segment leading up to the broadcast would develop, McMahon entered the ring and simply quoted the WWE signature “Then. Now. Forever. Together. “He then greeted everyone on the show. It was a short segment, not to mention the ongoing behind-the-scenes investigation.
According to Fightful Select, there is no producer for the segment and it is not listed in internal lists or scripts. Earlier in the day, McMahon stepped down as chairman and chief executive of WWE following an investigation into a $ 3 million payment made to a former employee with whom he allegedly had a relationship. There are also investigations into a number of non-disclosure agreements revealed by the WWE board, which are also said to concern former employees. Shortly after the news of McMahon’s resignation, WWE announced that “Mr. McMahon will appear on SmackDown later that evening, without explaining the nature behind it.
As the investigation progresses, McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie McMahon, will take over as chairman and CEO. Stephanie has been on leave from the company since May 19, but has now been called back into action during this turbulent time for the company. The head of WWE Talent Relations, John Laurinitis, is also involved in the accusatory accusations, without yet speaking about the future of his position in the organization. Further investigations are underway on the board of directors and senior management of WWE for breach of fiduciary duties, as revealed by Business Wire late last week.
