BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) – A joint global study found that long periods of sitting are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and serious cardiovascular disease.
According to the findings published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Cardiology, the relationship between sedentary hours with mortality and cardiovascular events is more pronounced in low-income and lower-middle-income countries.
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Simon Fraser University in Canada conducted this cohort study involving more than 100,000 participants aged 35 to 70 from 21 countries, with a mean follow-up of 11.1 years.
The results found that the risks of mortality and serious cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure, among participants who sat for six to eight hours a day increased by 12 percent to 13 percent, compared with with those sitting less than four. hours per day.
People who sat for more than eight hours witnessed a 20 percent increase in risk.
According to the study, reducing sedentary life together with increasing physical activity is likely to be an important strategy to reduce the risk of premature death and cardiovascular disease. Endemic
