Nothing Phone (1) shows the development of the notification LED

Cryptic would be an understatement when describing anything to Carl Pay. Until a week ago, the company was slowly building anticipation for its upcoming smartphone, Phone (1), feeding its audience and supporters, mostly small snippets of nothing. That all changed when Nothing decided to show off the party trick on his smartphone at a personal event. Today we can hear a little more about the phone and its LEDs, thanks to a new video published by MKBHD.

MKBHD got exclusive access to Nothing Phone (1) and showed the front and back. While the front looks like your typical Android smartphone (albeit with the same bezels), the back looks unique. The most unique feature of the phone is not its clean design on the back, but its LEDs. The phone uses just over 900 LEDs to make its unique model called the Glyph Interface. There is a small C-pattern that surrounds the camera and a larger C-pattern that surrounds the wireless charging pad. There is also a shape that looks like an exclamation mark at the bottom and a dash in the upper right corner.

The Glyph interface is not just a beautiful light show and offers functionality. The LEDs will pulse each time you receive an incoming notification, and may also light up when you start charging wirelessly. The lights can also show the status of your charge, giving you a visual indication of how much of the battery is depleted without having to turn on the display. The LEDs do not light up constantly and can only be reactivated by moving the phone.

The Glyph interface will have a set of ten melodies that will also offer synchronized LED models. Users will also be able to pair light models with specific contacts. Customizations can even be made in apps, giving users an idea of what kind of notification has arrived. Although it may sound boring, this is important as it is considered the development of the notification LED. Glyph Interface can even be used as a fill light when taking photos or videos. Last but not least, there is a flashing red LED that shows people when recording.

This is quite an idea, but one has to wonder how long the honeymoon will last. It will be interesting to see how far Nothing can take this movement and see how much is left for the trip. The company will hold an event on July 12. If you’re a little worried and can’t wait a few weeks, you can always take your chance and bid on the top 100 phones already on auction. Just be careful, as the phone doesn’t seem to offer global support, and the company says it may not work fully or at all in North America. You can check the Nothing website to confirm operator compatibility.
