It was a wedding day the Winnipeg couple will never forget – a beautiful place outdoors, surrounded by family and friends … on a day so hot that it broke a 134-year heat record.
As the big day drew closer, Brigette and Marco Fiore said they had watched warnings and heat warnings begin to appear in southern Manitoba.
“We just wanted to make sure no one got heat stroke or anything like that,” Brigette told CTV News. “I was already nervous, just like getting married. But I mean, I was worried about everyone else with the temperature.”
The couple discussed postponing the wedding, but had already waited three years to get married due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to survive the heat.
“We started to worry and we almost didn’t want to believe it,” Marco said. “We just thought there was no way it was going to be so hot.”
But it was.
Temperatures in Winnipeg rose to 37 C, the highest temperature recorded for June 19, 1888, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Weekend heat warnings warn that humidity levels will reach low in the 1940s on Sunday afternoon.
“It was really sweaty and hot, but everyone was having fun,” Marco said, adding that he and his wedding party were dressed in three-piece suits. “We rented a few more fans and portable AC, but they honestly didn’t make a dent. It was still hot.
The heat did not stop Marco and Brigette Fiore from celebrating their big day on June 19, 2022 (Submitted by: Brigette Fiore)
However, the heat did not stop Marco and Brigette from celebrating their big day on June 19 – an open-air wedding ceremony and a reception at Pine Ridge Hollow with 120 guests, who are said to have appeared and stayed until the end of the night without any problems.
“I think the only thing that went wrong was that my hair was flat at the end, but I mean, it was pretty wet and hot,” Brigette said with a laugh.
The couple says that even with the record heat, they could not want anything else.
“We got married and everyone went home safe – that’s the two main things,” Marco said. “And it’s a memory we’ll never forget.”
