Winnipeg police shooting: more details published

The Manitoba Police Department has released more information as it investigates the fatal shooting of a man shot dead by a police officer in Winnipeg last Friday.

Police shot dead a man at the intersection of Salter Street and Mountain Avenue around 4:15 p.m. Police in Winnipeg called the incident an “officer incident” and said the man was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

On Monday, the Independent Investigation Department (IIU) confirmed that it was investigating the incident, and revealed more details about the incident after they were notified by the Winnipeg Police Department.

The IIU said the incident occurred after a WPS employee completed a traffic stop in the area.

“The policeman was in his car when a man armed with a knife aggressively approached the door of the driver of the police vehicle,” the IIU said in a statement. “A collision occurred, as a result of which the suspect man was shot. The suspect was transported to the Center for Health Sciences, where he was pronounced dead.

WPS said Friday it would not comment as the IIU is now investigating.

Anyone with video or information about the event should call the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
