The PlayStation 5 may be a lot of things for a lot of different people, but one thing most will probably agree with is that it’s a damn big console. Now, however, an enterprising YouTuber has taken on the challenge of reducing the size of the machine to create the “world’s first PS5 Slim console” – one that is less than 2 cm thick.
The project is the work of YouTube channel DIY Perks, which specializes in videos for designing and building gadgets and technology at home and begins with the demolition of the giant Sony console to find out exactly which of its interiors should remain and the desire to go hit this goal of 2 cm.
Not surprisingly, most of the PS5 comes from its steel casing and CPU heatsink, and once those are gone, DIY Perk’s goal seems a little closer to reality. Eventually, to reach this magic number, the PS5’s existing cooling solution was replaced with a customized water drainage system made of copper sheet. It’s not a cheap option, it costs an incredible $ 240 just for the cover, but it seems to work.
Build the WORLD’S FIRST PlayStation 5 slim.
The other major change to DIY Perk inside the PS5 is the removal of significant internal power and the introduction of external power to save some extra space. All that is left after that is then pressed into an attractive copper box, which reduces the thickness of the PS5 from over 10 cm to an impressive 1.9 cm.
Of course, the huge DIY Perks external power supply designs, which are designed to be mounted on a nearby wall out of sight, can be considered a bit of a hoax given its size, but the aesthetic appeal of the resulting diminutive, thin copper bracket cannot be denied. – even if the first attempt ends with a slight overheating.
The full video is worth watching, even if the final build is not something most people will be able to come up with on their own. We hope that the official answer from Sony is not too far away.
