Progressive Texas congressional candidate Jessica Cisneros, backed by the Republic of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, gave way to incumbent MP Henry Cuelar in the Democratic primary.
Cuellar, a moderate Democrat against abortion, declared victory over his left-wing rival in the run-off in May, but the race was too close to be announced weeks after Cisneros called for a census. On Tuesday, election officials concluded that Cuellar won by several votes more than originally reported.
“As I said on election night, ‘the margin will be maintained’ – and not only has it been maintained, but it has grown,” Cuelar said in a statement.
“To those who did not vote for me, as your congressman, I will continue to work hard for you in Washington. “Although we may differ on certain positions, we share a common position on many issues in order to improve our communities and strengthen families,” Cuelar said.
“Now is the time to come together and win the general election in November,” he added.

According to the Democratic Party, Cuelar won the 28th constituency with 289 votes after the recount.
In his concession statement, Cisneros blamed his loss on “a corrupt political machine funded by Republicans Super PAC, the Koch brothers, private prisons, Big Oil, the Chamber of Commerce, dark money groups, Big Pharma and almost the entire Democratic establishment in Washington.”
“With this small difference, it’s clear that without their aggressive intervention in the lives of South Texas families, we would have won,” she said.
“The biggest thing that keeps us from pursuing the change we deserve is their fear. Fear of change, fear of the future. “

She vowed to continue working for the election of left-wing Texas Democrats for Congress.
“After a tenacious primary battle, South Texas voters have spoken out and decided that Henry Cuelar will represent them in Washington again, continuing to lead Borderland and advocate for hard-working middle-class families in Laredo. in San Antonio, “said Gilberto Hinoyosa, chairman of the Democratic Party of Texas.
“We are grateful to Jessica Cisneros for the positive campaign she has conducted – shedding light on the issues that really affect South Texas. We all know she will continue to fight for South Texas as we unite behind our nominee Henry Cuelar. “
After the May 24 election, Cuelar – the 28th district of Texas since 2005 – had a lead of just 177 votes over his progressive opponent. Cuelar will face Republican candidate Cassi Garcia in November as the Republican Party seeks to regain a majority in the House.
