Yesterday, a civilian jury found that disgraced comedian Bill Cosby had sexually assaulted Judy Hutt when she was 16 in 1975. After the verdict, Cosby’s team called it an “amazing victory.”
“Yesterday, actor and comedian Bill Cosby was honored with an astonishing victory by jurors in a civil trial led by Judy Hutt,” Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt said in a statement. “The jury decided to give Judy Hutt a $ 500,000 sentence, but voted 9-3 in favor of not rewarding Ms. Hutt with any criminal damages.”
It is strange to consider a verdict that confirms sexual assault on a minor by Cosby as any kind of victory. However, the part they seem to be celebrating is about criminal compensation, which, if awarded, would mean that Cosby acted with “malice, oppression or fraud” – meaning he would have to pay much more money. Despite the “victory”, Cosby’s lawyer Jennifer Bonjan plans to appeal the verdict, saying Hutt “will never receive a salary”.
