Yesterday, a civilian jury found that disgraced comedian Bill Cosby had sexually assaulted Judy Hutt when she was 16 in 1975. After the verdict, Cosby’s team called it an “amazing victory.”

“Yesterday, actor and comedian Bill Cosby was honored with an astonishing victory by jurors in a civil trial led by Judy Hutt,” Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt said in a statement. “The jury decided to give Judy Hutt a $ 500,000 sentence, but voted 9-3 in favor of not rewarding Ms. Hutt with any criminal damages.”

It is strange to consider a verdict that confirms sexual assault on a minor by Cosby as any kind of victory. However, the part they seem to be celebrating is about criminal compensation, which, if awarded, would mean that Cosby acted with “malice, oppression or fraud” – meaning he would have to pay much more money. Despite the “victory”, Cosby’s lawyer Jennifer Bonjan plans to appeal the verdict, saying Hutt “will never receive a salary”.

“Within a few weeks, attorney Jennifer Bonjin will be in Judge Craig D. Carlan’s court to appeal the $ 500,000 sentence, which means Ms. Hutt will never receive a day’s salary from Mr. Cosby and its projected growing legal accounts ($ 3 million plus dollars) with Allred, Morocco & Goldberg will be exceptional for many years to come, ”the statement said. “If jurors had awarded Judy Hutt criminal damages, it would have been in the order of $ 10 million plus dollars, which would have been a devastating loss to our legal efforts and the Cosby family.

Huth’s office, lawyer and women’s rights activist Gloria Allred dismissed Cosby’s statements, saying he “should be held accountable for what he did to her.”

“Mr. Cosby’s spokesman seems to be trying to snatch victory from the jaws of Mr. Cosby’s significant defeat,” Allred told Variety. Huth has no legal fees for fees with my law firm. The $ 3 million bill Bill Wyatt cites seems to be a figment of his imagination. Alternatively, the $ 3 million may be what Mr. Cosby had to spend to hire countless lawyers over the years in his failed efforts to defend himself against Ms. Hutt’s case.

In addition, Cosby said in a statement that he spoke to two jurors after the verdict, who told him: “You did not deserve to be in this court.” According to Variety, both jurors voted overwhelmingly in his favor on all issues and “disagreed with the majority of the jury on questions about Cosby’s behavior being harmful or sexually offensive.”

“Mr. Cosby, along with his team, has always remained steadfast in his innocence and we have never played in the sewers or gutters; but most importantly, we have remained on the mountain top of ethics, integrity, truth and facts.” says the Cosby spokesman. “The Cosbys are grateful to these particular jurors who removed their biases and ruled on the evidence and facts of this case.”
