Germany supplies Ukraine’s first heavy weapons five months after the war

Friedrich Merz, the opposition leader of the Christian Democratic Union who visited Zelensky before Scholz, called the chancellor a “poor” friend of Ukraine and accused him of having a “hidden agenda.”

Mr Scholz said in June that Germany was supplying weapons “more intensively than almost anyone else”, despite evidence to the contrary.

Last week, he visited Kyiv with the leaders of France and Germany to show Zelensky’s support and support Ukraine’s EU bid.

Germany has published an unusual list of military support

Berlin took the unusual step on Tuesday to publish a list of all the military support it has sent to Ukraine to counter accusations that it is not doing enough.

The United Kingdom and other Western European governments do not make their deliveries public, although the United States does.

“The federal government has now decided to adapt the procedure for publishing military support to the practice of our closest allies, such as the United States,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.

According to the list, Germany has already delivered 14,900 anti-tank mines, 500 STINGER anti-aircraft missiles, 2,700 STRELA missiles, 16 million pistol cartridges, 50 bunker launchers, 100 MG 3 machines with 500 spare bolts, 530 barrels of explosive charges, and 100 000 hand grenades.
