Monkeypox in Canada: 210 confirmed cases reported nationwide

Canada already has 210 confirmed cases of monkeypox, the Canadian Public Health Agency (PHAC) said on Wednesday.

As of June 22, Quebec reported 171 cases, while Ontario reported 33. Alberta has four cases so far, while in British Columbia there are two.

Smallpox is a viral disease caused by the genus Orthopoxvirus, which is associated with smallpox.

The virus enters the body through injured skin, airways or mucous membranes, according to PHAC on its website.

Canada announced its first case of monkeypox in Montreal on May 19.

The IMVAMUNE vaccine was approved by Health Canada in the same month to prevent monkeypox in adults aged 18 and over.

As of June 21, Quebec’s health department had administered 5,895 doses of the vaccine, according to The Canadian Press.

Toronto Public Health (TPH) and community partners have been conducting monkey vaccination clinics since last week to help protect at-risk individuals.

TPH states that the clinics are designed for people who have been in physical contact with “someone who has recently tested positive for monkeypox; had two or more sexual partners; have been diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis infection in the last two months; have visited bathrooms, sex clubs and other places of sexual contact in the last 21 days; and have engaged in or plan to engage in casual sex or sex work. “

Ottawa Public Health also held its first monkey measles vaccine clinic on Wednesday.

At least 2,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 42 countries, with the majority in the United Kingdom, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Humans can be infected with monkeypox through close contact with an infected person or animal or material infected with the virus, the WHO said.
