New ministers appointed in Alberta’s cabinet are moving

Outgoing Prime Minister Jason Kenny announced several cabinet reshuffles Tuesday afternoon, including new ministers for the environment and parks, infrastructure, transport and children’s services, according to a statement from the Alberta government.

The temporary appointment of Jason Nixon as interim Treasury Secretary has become permanent. Former environment and parks minister asked to step down after Travis Tows, former finance minister and chairman of the finance board, resigned to seek UCP leadership

Calgary MLA Whitney Issyk will take over as Minister of Environment and Parks, while her previous role as Associate Minister of Women’s Status will be played by Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Wegreville.

Prasad Panda was moved from infrastructure to the transport portfolio, while Calgary-Curry MLA Nicholas Milliken took over as infrastructure minister.

MLA in Calgary-Southeast Matt Jones will be the new Minister of Children’s Services, a role left vacant when Rebecca Schultz chose to run for UCP leadership. Jason Luan, Minister of Community and Social Services, has served as Minister of Children’s Services for the past week.

Brad Rutherford, MLA for Leduc-Beaumont and Deputy Government Whip, became Chief Government Whip and Minister without Portfolio.

The government also announced several changes outside the cabinet:

  • MLA Tracy Allard and Jackie Lovely have been appointed to the finance board.
  • Justice Minister Tyler Shandro has been appointed chairman of the Community and Family Political Committee.
  • Education Minister Adriana Lagrange has been appointed to the cabinet’s priorities committee.

After a review of the leadership in May, Kenny announced that he would resign as leader of the United Conservative Party. His deputy is expected to be elected in October.
