The taste of Danforth is canceled.
Despite six months of talks with the city to solve “logistical problems”, the organizers of the popular three-day and three-day event said they simply could not make it work and decided to “rethink” this year’s event.
“The short timeline available to adapt the event to the changes in the street meant that Taste of the Danforth in 2022 was at too great a risk of not being as successful as in the past,” Greektown in the Business Improvement Area. in Danforth (BIA) said in a statement posted on Twitter.
“Our membership and the wider community have high expectations for a great event.”
The business association said it would instead host “localized” events on the strip.
“So now we will take the time to work hand in hand with the city and all our partners to present the best Taste of the Danforth in 2023,” said BIA.
Earlier this month, BIA reiterated its call for the removal of the detached bike lanes and courtyards of CafeTO for curbs during the event.
Toronto spokesman Brad Ross said at the time that Taste of the Danforth organizers must embrace this “new reality” if they want to move forward with their event.
On June 1, he said removing and reinstalling bike lanes and patios was a “significant undertaking.”
“We expect at least a nine-day break to remove the lanes and installations of CafeTO and then have to reinstall them,” Ross told CP24.
Today he said that the city “understands” the decision of BIA and estimates that “the best way to ensure the long-term success of the festival is to postpone its restart until 2023.”
In a statement to CP24, Ross said the city “will continue to work with all BIA on festivals and looks forward to working with GreekTown on Danforth BIA to rethink Danforth’s taste in 2023.”
He also said the city would help Danforth BIA’s Greektown “in any way, as it brings localized events to Danforth this summer, where music, food and the lively community for which Danforth is known can be enjoyed. to everyone”.

Local count. Paula Fletcher also said she respected the BIA’s determination that “the best option for returning to a successful Taste of the Danforth is to rethink the 2023 event to allow for an extra year to plan this very popular street festival ”.
“With so many Toronto-Danforth residents, I will be celebrating the vibrant business community and street atmosphere of GreekTown this summer with their 32 CaféTO patios and live music on the street, and I welcome residents from across the city to join us and keep strongly supporting our local business, “the Toronto-Danforth spokesman said in a statement.
“I am confident that when Taste returns to Danforth, the wait will be worth it.”
After a two-year break in the pandemic, Taste of the Danforth was scheduled to air from August 5 to 7 on Danforth Avenue, from Broadview to Donlands avenue.
Considered one of the largest street festivals in Canada, it was expected to receive about 1.6 million visitors in three days.
In 2019, the event had an economic impact of approximately $ 70 million, organizers said.
