Google Desktop News has received a sleek new look and several new features.
The search giant details the update in a blog post on June 22, full of photos of the news. When you first go to Google News on the Web, you may see a prompt asking if you want to try the new look.
First, the new design moves various categories, such as “For You” and “Technology”, from the sidebar to a new top navigation bar. Then the Home segment now includes “Your Briefing” with news tailored to you. This includes “Top Stories”, including “Full Coverage”, to bring together multiple articles on a topic.
There is also a new Local News section that shows leading stories from specific areas, such as Toronto. Users are free to add regions to this section and navigate through them by clicking the various buttons.
Below is “Your Topics”, which includes stories in various categories such as “World”, “Business”, “Technology” and more. This section can also be customized, allowing users to choose topics to present.

Overall, the new look looks much less like a story feed and more like a digital newspaper with different sections focused on different stories and topics.
In addition to changing the way Google News looks, Google has also described in detail in its blog that it has expanded the “Fact Check” section. The fact-finding highlights the debunking of viral allegations by organizations such as the “Complete Fact”. However, The Verge notes that fact-checking remains hidden at the bottom of the page (I couldn’t even find it on my Google News page).
