Senior Justice and White House officials gutted Justice Department attorney Jeffrey Clark during a high-stakes meeting in the Oval Office in early January 2021, where then-President Donald Trump was considering appointing Clark as Attorney General to may use the powers of the Ministry of Justice to cancel the 2020 elections.
“I said that Jeff Clark is not even competent to serve as Attorney General. He was never a criminal lawyer. He has never conducted a criminal investigation in his life. He has never been before a grand jury, much less a court jury, “said former Deputy Attorney General Richard Donohue in a video released Thursday, recalling what he said to Trump during a critical meeting in the Oval Office.
Donohue said he told Clark, “You’re an environmental lawyer. How about you go back to your office and we’ll call you when there’s an oil spill.
Trump’s White House lawyer Eric Hershman said Clark was repeatedly “hit on the head” during the meeting. He said he had explicitly told Clark that he was breaking the law, according to his recorded video testimony before the commission, whose video was released on Thursday.
“Hell, congratulations, you just admitted that your first step or action would be to take a crime because the chief prosecutor would commit a crime,” Hershman said.
Hershman later testified that he thought Clark’s plan was “crazy” and told the committee that he had told Clark, “The best I can say is the only thing you know about the environmental and election challenges. they both start with E. And based on your answers tonight, I’m not even sure you know that.
According to Donohue, then-White House adviser Pat Chipolon said during the meeting that Clark’s plan to send letters to states on the battlefield, encouraging them to interfere in the election results, was a “murder-suicide pact.”
During the Oval Office meeting, these officials challenged Clark’s ideas, although he continued to try to explain to Trump that he would expose widespread fraud if he were appointed head of the Department of Justice. These officials successfully persuaded Trump to abandon the plan to fire then-Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and promote Clark.
