Apple iOS 16 may report spam SMS messages

If you’re tired of receiving spam messages on your phone, you’re not alone. According to research firm RoboKiller, the United States received nearly 12 billion spam and fraudulent text messages in May alone, rounding to approximately 43 per person in the country. Fortunately, Apple now hopes to help combat the influx with a new reporting feature for the upcoming iOS 16.

Launched for the beta version of the operating system, the new feature allows iPhone users to report spam SMS messages directly to Apple, as well as the user’s service provider, who will then research and mark the number for future spam prevention. The feature used to be available in older generations of iOS, but only worked with iMessages, so increasing the coverage of SMS messages will be useful. However, it should be noted that reporting numbers will not automatically mean that you will no longer receive messages from them, so you will still need to block the numbers manually on your device if you want to be sure.

Unfortunately, there is still no official release date for iOS 16, but Apple is expected to release the update this fall.

Elsewhere in the world of technology, Twitter is introducing content in a longer form with a feature called Notes.
