Calgary Knows MP Michelle Rempel Garner has said she will not run in the Alberta United Conservative Party leadership race.
In a lengthy Substack post released Thursday, Rempel Garner said the campaign’s logistics were in place, but she expressed concerns about an internal conflict within the UCP.
She compared the UCP group to the Federal Conservative Party, saying both parties had “quarrels” in which members were subjected to hours of public scrutiny. The new OKP leader must restore confidence in the party, and the group must be willing to allow that to happen, she said.

“Everyone who enters politics must be prepared to deal with this… But the things I listed above, which happen in both provincial and federal parties, cross the border. This should never happen in a functional place of business, political or otherwise, “wrote Rempel Garner.

“With the UCP group, since I’m out of it, I don’t know where all the painful places from the events of the last few years are. But from what many people have confidentially shared with me, it seems that there are many of them and they look quite fresh.
“And, frankly, I am concerned about what would happen if I intervened as a leader in the current internal dynamics of the UCP group, especially given that we will have to govern as we prepare for the upcoming general elections. . “

Rempel Garner also compared Prime Minister Jason Kenny’s term to that of former Conservative leaders Andrew Shear and Erin O’Toole, saying she was referring to the troubled work environment that took root long before their posts.

“The knives were open to both from day one. “Although they had some significant successes and mistakes were made (who is not wrong), in the end they could not lead people who did not want to be led by them,” said Rempel Garner.
“And so the environment deteriorated.”
The announcement comes after it was previously reported that Rempel Garner is considering a proposal to become the leader of the UCP in Alberta.

This comes after Patrick Brown’s campaign manager Sean Schnell left to help Rempel Garner with her possible offer. Last week, Rempel Garner announced that he was stepping down as Brown’s national co-chair.
Rempel Garner said she was grateful for the position she currently held, and said she loved what she was doing on Parliament Hill, saying she intended to run again as a Calgary Knot MP.
“I love what I do – despite the intra-party ups and downs of the last few years and whatever happens in the future,” she said.
“I will serve as long as I continue to gain the trust of my community, and to be completely clear, I will not go anywhere and I intend to propose him again as an MP.”

Jason Ribeiro, a doctoral student at the University of Calgary, said Rempel Garner’s post at Substack was a warning to the UCP to resolve its internal conflict ahead of next year’s provincial election. The post is an accurate representation of the NDP and shows the party is difficult to lead, Ribeiro said.

“It doesn’t look good, especially so close to leadership elections and general elections,” Ribeiro said.
“If you’re a UCP supporter, Michelle Rempel Garner’s blog is an attempt to get your house in order at best. At worst, it’s a gift to UCP, because everyone is behind Rachel Notley.
But Ribeiro said it was too early to say whether Rempel Garner’s announcement was a determining factor in who would win the election.
“The favorite in these polls does not necessarily mean the winner of the ballot. The whole point is to be as tasty as possible for as many people as possible, “said Ribeiro.
“The important thing is that people swing over the party’s believers, raise funds and persuade people to buy membership.”
