The first monkeypox was discovered in South Africa

The first case of monkeypox was found in South Africa in a 30-year-old man who had not traveled recently, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) said on Thursday.

The man resided in the province of Gauteng, home of Johannesburg and Pretoria, and was discovered through laboratory tests at the NICD on Wednesday, according to a statement from the National Health Laboratory Service.

The NICD said it has begun tracking contacts, identifying any additional related cases, and recent major social events could serve as super-common events.

Since May 2022, monkeypox has been reported in more than 3,000 individuals from a number of African countries, several European countries, the United States, Canada and others.

This is the first outbreak of monkeypox in several countries and is already the largest recorded outbreak of monkeypox.

Human-to-human transmission of apes involves close contact with an infected person or material that has been infected by an infected person. The virus is not highly transmitted and close physical contact is required for transmission.
