Wales to expand access to free side-flow tests as Covid case increases

Wales is extending its access to free side-flow (LFD) tests until the end of July due to the growing number of Covid cases across the country. Health Minister Eluned Morgan has confirmed that the free tests will remain available in Wales until 31 July.

The tests will be available to the public who show symptoms of coronavirus – such as fever, a new prolonged cough or loss or change in your sense of smell or taste – along with free access for people visiting someone eligible for a new Covid-19 treatment.

The announcement comes after an increase in cases, with the latest study by the National Statistics Office reporting an increase in cases in the UK. Approximately one in 45 people in Wales currently has Covid-19. The emergence of sub-options BA.4 and BA.5 also contributes to this increase as they become increasingly dominant in the United Kingdom.

The Minister of Health also announced that the following tests will continue:

  • LFD and PCR testing for those eligible for Covid-19 treatment;
  • PCR testing for Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses for symptomatic care and inmates;
  • PCR and LFD testing according to the patient testing framework and when clinically recommended, including preoperative hospital patients and placed in nursing homes returning from inpatient hospital stays;
  • LFD testing for symptomatic health and social care personnel, and;
  • Twice a week LFD tests for asymptomatic examination of health and social staff.

The Welsh Government added that those who visit people in care homes should continue to test, using tests provided by the care home they visit. Self-isolation payments of £ 500 will end on 30 June, while the statutory Covid-19 sickness benefit scheme will be extended until 31 August to help welfare staff stay away from work due to a positive test.

Ms Morgan said: “Testing is an effective tool to break the transmission chain, and as the number of cases increases, it is vital that we continue to conduct tests to protect the most vulnerable in our society. As we saw before, Covid can change quickly. I am announcing this extension in response to the changing picture and new options for concern.

“I would also ask people to take precautions to protect the more vulnerable in the community, to wear masks in health and medical facilities, to stay at home if the test is positive, and to accept the vaccine offer. We know that the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself. I urge those who qualify to have their own spring booster, if they haven’t already – the booster is available until June 30.

“Covid is not missing. As we learn to live safely with him, we will continue to monitor the situation and, as we have done for the last two years, we will work together to keep Wales safe. ”
