A Briton was killed after falling into the infamous Devil’s Pass in northern Spain.
The 25-year-old was staying at a hotel in Eibar, a town in the province of Guipúzcoa, with a friend and was mountaineering in the Basque Country, according to El Correo.
He reportedly separated from his climbing partner and continued to navigate the limestone mountain range of Anboto on Thursday afternoon in rough conditions.
Severe conditions are believed to have caused the unnamed climber to fall while trying to navigate the open route, which is known to be difficult to climb in wet weather.
Emergency services were busy to find the young man, and a search was carried out at night to find him, including helicopters, rescue dogs and the Red Cross.
His body was found by a helicopter surveillance and rescue unit in Erzainza on Friday. It was established that the man was a tourist on vacation.
A spokesman for the Erzainza police said: “Emergency services have found the lifeless body of the climber we have been searching for since Thursday night.
“The alarm was raised at around 8.30 pm, saying that the 25-year-old had disappeared near the top of Mount Aluitz.
“A police helicopter found his body in a place called the canal de Infernu Zubi, near Mount Aluitz, where it appears he may have fallen.
The Devil’s Passage – Paso del Diablo in Spanish – is an area between Mount Alliutz and Amboto that is difficult for even the most experienced climbers to know and has previously caused deaths.
Hulen Fernandez Echebaria, president of the Tabira Alpine Club in Durango, told El Correo that the mountain is still popular with tourists, despite frequent slips on the insidious limestone.
