Russian President Vladimir Putin was ridiculed by Group of Seven leaders as they sat around a table on Sunday, beginning their three-day summit in the German Bavarian Alps.
Before leaders began discussing the Russian president’s invasion of Ukraine and their strategies for immobilizing Russian assets, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked if they should take off their jackets – or if they should “undress even more.”
“We all need to show that we are tougher than Putin,” he joked, causing his colleagues to laugh.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined in, saying: “We will do a demonstration of horseback riding with bare breasts.”
Putin is depicted shirtless, riding a brown horse, wearing army pants, a gold chain and sunglasses, published by Russian state media.
Boris Johnson then waved at the cameras behind the table.
“We will show them our breasts,” he said.
However, the meeting was not humorous.
Early Sunday morning, Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, hit two apartment buildings and killed at least one person.
The attack was the latest act of destruction in an invasion that killed thousands and forced millions to flee their homes.
The world’s response to the Russian invasion will be a key topic at the G7 summit, and US President Joe Biden has condemned Russia’s actions as “more than their barbarism”.
Johnson, meanwhile, urged leaders not to succumb to “fatigue.”
The leaders of Britain, Canada, Japan, France and the United States also discussed bans on raw materials and other ways to reaffirm their condemnation of Russia.
