Impeachment SCOTUS judges who lie about their positions

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Sunday that there must be “consequences” – including impeachment – for U.S. Supreme Court judges who lie about their positions during the Senate confirmation hearings.

The progressive lightning’s comments come amid allegations that Judges Brett Cavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch misled Senate members about their positions on Roe v. Wade during the judges’ confirmation hearings.

“There must be consequences for such a profound destabilizing action and a hostile takeover of our democratic institutions,” the AOC (D-NY) told NBC News.

She was asked by presenter Chuck Todd if she thought it was an impeachment.

“I believe so. I believe so. I believe that lying under oath is a crime subject to impeachment, “Ocasio-Cortez replied.

“And what makes it particularly dangerous is that it sends a clear signal to all future nominees that they can now lie to properly elected members of the United States Senate to secure confirmation of the nominees by the Supreme Court,” the Dem brand said.

The testimony of Gorsuch and Cavanaugh during their confirmation hearings was delivered by Senator Joe Manchin (D-WVa) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) following the Supreme Court’s order on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark judgment of 1973. to legalize abortion in the United States.

Both senators voted to confirm Cavanaugh and Gorsuch, Trump’s nominees, whose rise to the Supreme Court helped establish his conservative 6-3 majority.

Both senators said they felt betrayed.

“This decision contradicts what Judges Gorsuch and Cavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both insisted on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents on which the country relies,” Collins said in a statement.

Manchin said: “I trusted Judge Gorsuch and Judge Cavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed that Rowe v. Wade was a legal precedent, and I am concerned that they chose to reject the stability that the decision provided for two generations of Americans.”

In a confirmation hearing, Gorsuch said Rowe v. Wade was “a precedent for the U.S. Supreme Court,” and Cavanaugh said the case was “settled as a precedent.”

The two judges joined the majority opinion, written by Judge Samuel Alito, of defeating Rowe against Wade.
