Ecuador may stop pumping oil within 48 hours due to protests

June 27 (Reuters) – Ecuador may suspend oil production within 48 hours due to “acts of vandalism, seizure of wells and road closures,” the energy ministry said Sunday amid anti-government protests that killed most – at least six people.

The former OPEC party, which pumped about 520,000 barrels a day before the protests, could suspend oil operations because “it was not possible to transport the supplies and diesel needed to sustain the operations,” the ministry said in a statement.

Ecuador has been embroiled in mass anti-government protests since June 13, calling for lower prices for fuel, food and other basic products, which has cut oil production by more than half.

President Guillermo Lasso said on Sunday that he would cut gasoline and diesel prices by 10 cents a gallon, a day after the government and indigenous leaders held their first official talks since the protests began. Read more
