Airbnb announced a global ban on parties on Tuesday, following a temporary restriction imposed two years ago.

The company permanently bans “destructive parties and events” that include open-ended gatherings. “Party houses” that people book to host a big event for just one night will also remain banned.

Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms, such as Vrbo, are battling party houses and large-scale events.

Airbnb imposed a ban on party houses and introduced several security features in 2019 after five people were killed in a shooting at one of their reservations. In 2020, the company imposed a global ban on all countries as the pandemic hit.

Airbnb said that since implementing its policy in August 2020, it has seen a 44% drop in the percentage of party reports compared to the previous year. “The temporary ban has proved effective and today we are officially codifying the ban as our policy,” the company said in a blog post.

But because of the way these companies work, they can’t always stop having parties. Sometimes guests can check in at remote properties while the owner is away and can invite as many people as they want.

Airbnb said guests trying to break its rules would face consequences ranging from account suspension to complete removal from the platform. In 2021, for example, more than 6,600 guests were suspended by Airbnb for violating the party ban.
