BURNABY, BC –
A man died after a severe accident on the Burnaby-Vancouver border.
An investigation is currently underway, blocking traffic on Tuesday morning on Boundary Road, a busy route.
Police and firefighters from Burnaby and Vancouver were called to Boundary Road near Canada Way at around 12:45 a.m. after reports of a vehicle fire as a result of the collision.
Investigators say a black Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on Boundary Road when it crashed into a tree and caught fire.
The driver was the only person inside. He was trapped in the car and died on the spot.
“We would like to thank the many witnesses who tried to save the driver and contacted the emergency services,” said Cap. Alexa Hodgins of Burnaby RCMP.
“We understand that this type of event can be traumatic, but the actions of the witnesses are nothing but heroic,” Hodgins said.
Later, first aid officers placed a tarpaulin on the driver’s side of the damaged vehicle.
Police say it is too early to say whether speed or alcohol are factors, but the damage left appears to be evidence of a high-impact crash.
The airbags were deployed, the vehicle was almost unrecognizable, and there were crushed car parts all the way.
The SUV stopped in the middle, but the Burnaby RCMP’s criminal collision investigation team took over the investigation.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or may have a video of Boundary Road between Grandview Highway and Kingsway Avenue between 12:00 and 1:00 a.m. to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
The border between Canada Way and 22nd Avenue is closed in both the north and south directions, while police continue to investigate the collision.
This is an evolving story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
