Literally the worst to first in five short seasons, Colorado Avelanch equaled the best record of the season on the road to winning the Stanley Cup on Sunday night. (Getty Images)
Colorado Avelanch are champions of the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001, and the festivities are in full swing for the players, their families and friends and … team reporters?
Longtime Avalanche beat reporter Mike Chambers of the Denver Post and shared photos of his own celebrations with the Cup on Monday on Twitter.
Chambers posed with a glass over his head with a cigar in his mouth and a soiled button-down shirt before taking pictures with Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog and the trophy.
Many fans and colleagues in the media took an exception to Chambers’ celebrations, reminding the reporter of the impartiality and objectivity that the press is traditionally expected to adhere to.
Others, such as retired NHL referee Dave Jackson, defended Chambers, unconvinced by the argument that defeated reporters could not enjoy the success of their team.
Of course, as with everything that goes viral on Twitter, memes began to appear, illuminating the polarizing celebrations.
Chambers responded to the comments, claiming to be a professional since he started covering the team and that Landeskog insisted on participating in the fun.
“I’ve been a real supporter of this for 25 years,” Chambers wrote on Twitter. “In context, I was not the only journalist at the event, but I may have been the only one to whom Gabe Landeskog handed the cup and said, ‘Hold on.’ Gabe and I go back a long way. A human exchange between two men who share respect for the game. “
Avalanche’s pre-pool is not unfamiliar with controversy, as just a year ago veteran reporter Adrian Dayter puzzled star striker Nathan McKinnon with a strange question after eliminating the team in Game 6 of the 2021 conference finals at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights.
McKinnon’s sharp “no”, followed by a confused shake of the head, is a very close reaction to this puzzling and obscene tirade / question.
