Democratic MP Sean Kasten will win his party’s nomination for the 6th Illinois Congressional District, CNN projects.
Casten defeated another incumbent, Marie Newman. Casten served two terms in Congress after changing his district in the suburbs of Chicago in 2018.
The place created in last year’s restructuring process was inconvenient for both incumbents: Newman lives outside the new area, while Kasten lives in it. But more of Newman’s voters in the district she currently represents are in the new 6th district, while most of Kasten’s current voters have been relocated to another district.
Newman was in her first term, but is facing an investigation by the House of Representatives’ ethics committee into allegations that she may have promised federal work to a major rival in exchange for their political support. Newman denied the allegations, saying the complaints were politically motivated.
Newman was elected to Congress in 2020 when she ousted MP Dan Lipinski, one of the most conservative members of the party’s House at the time.
A pro-Israeli group advertised against Newman, criticizing her for voting against $ 1 billion last year to fund Israel’s Iron Dome missile shield.
