The NBA’s free agency didn’t start until 6 p.m. on Thursday, but Wednesday wasn’t a slow day for news about the Washington Wizards.
In the team’s first big off-season move, Washington agreed to exchange Centavius Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith in Denver for Monte Morris guard and veteran winger Will Barton, according to two people familiar with the deal. This move will not become official until July 6, when the league finalizes the numbers for the ceiling on salaries and taxes on luxury for the season 2022-23.
With the deal, the Wizards marked one of their two main priorities for the summer: to find a reliable solution to the points. The other is to re-sign a long-term contract for the Bradley Biel cornerstone franchise.
Beale turned down a $ 36.4 million player choice for the 2022-23 season on Wednesday, according to his agent Mark Bartelstein, and became a free agent for the first time in his career. The guard can now re-sign with Wizards for a maximum contract worth about $ 250 million over five years, or join another team, either through free mediation or through a signing and trading deal.

Staying with the Wizards is financially sound for Beal, who turned 29 on Tuesday. The largest contract that any other team can offer to a guard is worth about $ 185 million over four years.
If he returns, he will dress along with a reliable points guard who checks out many of Washington’s boxes. Athletic was the first to report Maurice’s trading.
Morris, 27, is not the missing piece to complete a hypothetical “Big Three” starring Beale and Christaps Porzingis. But he has three assets that make him great for Wizards: He’s a capable defender; he is more concerned with organizing the team and giving assists than scoring points; and owes him just over $ 18.9 million over the next two seasons. For a team that could soon be tied to a huge contract with Beal and owes Porzingis nearly $ 70 million over the next two years, that’s a friendly salary.
Morris, Barton and coach Wes Anseld Jr. also have a long-established relationship with the Nuggets. When Anseld returned to Denver in December for the first time since taking the reins of the Wizards, Morris was one of a handful of players who approached the Washington sideline before the game to congratulate the former Nuggets assistant. Morris approached Unseld with a wide smile and held out his hand before embracing the coach and making him embrace with laughter.
Anseld was part of the Denver team that selected Morris in 2017 and signed a bilateral contract with him this season, dividing his time between the NBA and the G League. He climbed to start 74 games last season as Jamal Murray rehabilitated an ACL injury – a hard-won path to the pros that people at the Washington front office appreciate. Wizards brass also noted Maurice’s leadership skills.

Pointgard averaged 12.6 points and 4.4 assists last season. And although he is not considered a guard with the first result, he can put the ball in the hoop: his true shooting rate of 58.3 was eighth among all guard points last season, tied with Jalen Brunson of Dallas.
As a bonus, Morris and Washington striker Kyle Kuzma have relationships that extend to elementary school.
The Baltimore-born Barton is a 31-year-old winger who could rank well behind Biel in the depth standings. He averaged 14.7 points in more than 30 minutes per game last season and shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 36.5 percent from three points.
Wizards front office members like its versatility. Barton can create his own goal options or set others up and off the bench or start if necessary.
Washington will still have to find depth behind Maurice as a step, as Raul Neto and Thomas Satoransky are set for a vacant position. The team hosted a pair of potential prospects at a three-day mini-camp over the weekend in Chris Dunn, the fifth pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, and Pierre Henry, an American-born guard who has become a Euroleague player in recent years. .
Meanwhile, veteran point guard Smith heads to his 13th team, an NBA record.
