Senate President Pro Tempore Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), The top member of the Senate Democratic Group, who is third in the line of presidential succession, fell and broke his hip and will undergo surgery on Thursday.
Leahy, 82, fell at his home in McLean, Virginia, on Wednesday night, his office said.
Leahy’s emergency operation means he may have to miss time in the Senate, which would limit what Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) can schedule in the Senate 50-50.
Any candidate who does not have the support of Republicans will have to wait for Lihi to return to work, unless there is an absence from the GOP side of the aisle.
“Senator Leahy will undergo surgery to repair a broken thigh he suffered as a result of a fall at his home in McLean, Virginia, on Wednesday night,” Leahy’s office said in a statement.
The statement said a lack of perception of depth was a factor and that the senior senator was expected to fully recover.
“After being born blind with one eye, the senator has struggled all his life with reduced perception of depth. He has suffered some remarkable annoyances over the years, but he has finally caught up with him, “said his office.

The office said doctors had determined that the best course of action was to have surgery to repair his broken thigh as soon as possible.
Leahy, who is serving his eighth term in the Senate, announced in November that he would retire later this year.
Only Vice President Harris and President Nancy Pelosi (D-California) are ahead of Leahy in the line of succession if President Biden is unable to perform his duties.
