After the Supreme Court decision, dozens of urologists reported a huge increase in men requesting sterilization procedures.
The jump is most noticeable among childless men under the age of 30.
Doug Stein, a doctor known as the “Vasectomy King” for his longtime advocacy of the procedure, said the spike in requests was “very, very noticeable” in the days after the Supreme Court decision.
His clinic is fully booked until the end of August, causing him to add extra days to his schedule to meet demand.
“Many of the guys say they’ve been considering a vasectomy for a while and [Supreme Court] the decision was just the final factor that tipped them over the edge,” he told the Washington Post.
300 to 400 percent increase in consultations
A newspaper analysis found that doctors in some states reported a “300 to 400 percent” increase in vasectomy consultations and a “200 to 250 percent” increase in web traffic around the procedure.
One doctor, John Currington, said that “at least 60 or 70 percent mention the Supreme Court decision” during their appointments.
Some, like Eric Nissi, 29, of Florida, said fears that states might next take measures to restrict access to contraception prompted them to register for vasectomy.
