A 10-year-old girl was denied an abortion in Ohio after the Supreme Court ruled last week that it overturned Roe v. Wade, demonstrating the tangible impact the Supreme Court’s decision has on patients seeking access to the medical procedure.
A child abuse doctor in Ohio contacted Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an OB/GYN in Indiana, after seeing a 10-year-old patient who was six weeks and three days pregnant, the Indianapolis Star reported.
That patient is now headed west to Indiana as Ohio’s abortion ban, which bans the medical procedure when a fetus’s heartbeat begins at about six weeks, went into effect quickly after the Supreme Court issued its ruling.

While several groups filed a lawsuit trying to block the state law from taking effect on Wednesday, an emergency stay on the abortion ban was rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court on Friday, meaning the ban can be upheld while the case is reheard. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
Ohio is among a number of states that have revoked access to abortion after the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to abortion. Some laws have been put on hold pending legal challenges.
But Indiana could soon pass its own abortion law later this month, with a special session scheduled for later in July and the Legislature expected to touch on banning the medical procedure, WFYI reported.
