Four separate earthquakes were recorded near the southern port city of Bandar-e 袘, including one that registered a magnitude of 6.1, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center also recorded a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in southern Iran.
Twelve villages in neighboring Hormozgan province were damaged, FARS said.
The most damage was done in the village of Sayehkhosh, where many houses were destroyed, Iranian state media IRNA reported, citing local authorities.
Five villages were left without electricity due to the earthquakes, officials said.
“Currently, 75 rescue and emergency teams are present in the earthquake-affected areas with the use of 12 operational vehicles,” the Iranian Red Crescent Society said on Twitter.
Tremors could be felt in the United Arab Emirates, according to reports from CNN staff on the ground.
Other affected countries include Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and Afghanistan, according to the USGS.
The area is known for its seismic activity, and the USGS included in its update that the “series of earthquakes” reported in the past few hours was “relatively common.”
At least one person has died after a series of earthquakes rocked southern Iran last November.
