Days after a 28-year-old cyclist was killed by a dump truck in downtown Vancouver, a memorial ride in his honor is being planned.
The victim of Wednesday’s collision at Pacific and Hornby streets has been identified as Agustin Beltran, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia.
After the accident, a memorial with flowers and candles is growing at the intersection.
Dr. Patrick Francois, director of UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics, released a statement Thursday calling Beltran’s tragic death a “tremendous loss” for the university community.
“We are shocked and devastated by Agustin’s death,” Francois wrote. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Agustin’s family, friends and peers. We share their grief today and in the days to come.”
Counseling services are being provided to “all affected members of the community,” the director added.
On Sunday, Beltran is being remembered with a group bike ride scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
“A trip to remember, not a protest. The family would like to see a big turnout,” wrote Twitter user Anthony Floyd.
Meanwhile, Vancouver police are continuing to investigate the crash. Authorities said the driver was cooperating with their investigation and do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
After the accident, a damaged blue and black bicycle can be seen under the wheels of the dump truck.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident or dash cam footage taken in the area around 7:30 a.m. to come forward.
Fellow cyclists: Sunday morning there will be a memorial ride for Agustin Beltran, who was tragically killed while cycling in Vancouver on Wednesday. A commemorative attraction, not a protest. The family would like to see a big profit. Follow @Lucyincanada for details. #bikeyvr
