Overcrowded Venice sets date for day trip fee | Holy

Venice will charge most of its visitors an entrance fee from next year as it tries to deal with overcrowding.

“We are pioneers, the first city in the world to implement a measure that could be revolutionary,” said Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism chief.

From January 16, day trips must book their visit online in advance of travel. They will pay a basic charge of €3, rising to €10 at peak times.

The scheme, which was approved by the city council, will be closely watched by other overcrowded tourist destinations around the world.
