The author behind Deus Ex has joined BioWare

BioWare has hired the writer behind the Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy games at Eidos Montreal.

Mary DeMarle spent over a decade at Eidos Montreal building the Deux Ex universe that fans know today.

DeMarle was responsible for the narrative and screenplay on all recent Deus Ex titles, including Mankind Divided, Human Revolution, and the mobile spinoffs Deus Ex: Go and Deus Ex: The Fall.

She also created the story and led the script team for 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which won the Game Award for Best Narrative.

The narrative designer shared the news from BioWare on his LinkedIn page on Friday, but did not name specific projects. It is possible that she will be in either the upcoming Dragon Age Dreadwolf or Mass Effect 4.

The exit follows Gearbox owner Embracer’s announcement in May that it would acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montreal and a catalog of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain for $300 million.

Speaking to GI.biz last summer, DeMarle discussed his take on the relationship between gameplay and narrative in game development.

“For many, many years working in this industry, I’ve known that story is often subservient to gameplay,” said Demarle. “But if I understand the game and what the feeling is that I’m trying to make the players feel, then I can understand that the gameplay is trying to do it that way and the story is there to support that or take it forward.” How can the things I write help highlight things the gameplay needs, etc.?

“As long as you always know the game you’re trying to make and understand why, then it comes down to constant communication between narrative and gameplay and constantly looking at and understanding from that perspective.”
